摘要:調查結果顯示:傳統的理工科大學英語專業的學生在撰寫本科畢業論文時遇到的主要問題有選題時的困惑、資料的缺乏和研究方法的不足等。解決這些問題不僅需要教師與學生思想上的重視,更有賴于學校的大力支持。

畢業論文(graduationthesis)是高等學校學生在畢業時所撰寫的帶有總結性的論文。對英語專業本科生而言,畢業論文同時就是學士學位論文(BAthesis),是他們申請學士學位的重要依據。它一般要求該生通過此論文的撰寫,體現他在某一學科內已掌握的基本理論和所具備的初步研究能力。英語專業高年級教學大綱明文規定:“應培養學生撰寫課程論文及畢業論文的能力”。近幾年,國家在陸續進行本科工作評鑒,其中很重要的一個環節便是本科畢業論文的規范化管理。對理工科院校及師范性專科學校的英語專業來說,學科建設不齊全,辦學時間短,經驗不足,往往會造成某些方面的疏漏和問題。筆者就此對本校的97級英語專業本科生的畢業論文的撰寫情況作了調查,從中發現了一些問題并找到一些解決問題的辦法。

一有關論文的一般情況論文撰寫的方向由指導教師填寫

學生根據自己的興趣選擇方向和指導教師,一般每人填報3位指導教師,由系里進行統一調配,指導教師通常指導3到5人不等。為了給學生充分的時間撰寫出質量較高的畢業論文,論文的工作從大四第一學期末開始。確定指導教師,探討選題,查找資料的先期工作按規定都在第二學期開學時完成。開學后便是與導師共同確定選題,開始正式的撰寫工作。最終成績的評定由多個成績綜合而來:指導教師的評分,評閱教師的評分和答辯的平均成績。論文的評分和答辯的評分均有標準可依,但因標準過于籠統,評分教師在實際操作時難以把握。學校對論文的優,良,中,及格的比例有一定的限制,故而最后的評分結果實難看出一屆學生的論文整體水平。指導教師反映這幾年來真正花了功夫,但體現一定質量的論文卻鳳毛麟角。筆者調查了本校97級英語專業應屆畢業生的論文撰寫的情況,并為了更深一層地了解情況,發現問題,還向學生發放調查問卷85份,回收有效問卷66份。并采訪指導教師2人。

二調查結果97級學生共有85名,指導教師共23名,其中正高職稱3名,副高6名,中級10名,初級4名

根據問卷調查,絕大多數學生(66%)選擇自己最感興趣的方向,其它學生選擇自己認為較為易寫的方向。由于學科建設,師資隊伍的不健全,不完備,我系尚未形成一定規模的學科體系,指導教師嚴重缺乏。目前每年需從大學英語、研究生英語教研室調用相當于本系教師數量的指導教師來完成該項工作。各個指導教師根據自己的專業,研究方向和興趣愛好確定指導方向,造成選題比較分散。這給答辯分組,互相評閱也帶來一定困難。有不少學科領域是英語本科生在4年學習中幾乎不涉及的,例如應用語言學,語用學,跨文化交際學等。有些學生憑著自己個人的理解興致勃勃地來和指導教師商談選題,結果發現所選方向與事先的想法大相徑庭,因而頗為茫然。由此看來,畢業論文的方向應立足于學生4年學習的內容。調查顯示各有1/3的學生認為畢業論文的撰寫與4年英語學習的關系是對四年學習的檢驗和本科階段學習與進一步學習的銜接。

筆者認為要進一步提升畢業論文的作用,做法有二:一是適度削減那些學生絲毫沒有概念的論文方向,使選題較為集中;二是拓寬學生的語言學、文學的眼界,除了開設普通語言學之外,開設有關其他學科方向的選修課。這樣學生可以自己選擇聽課,并為畢業論好理論認識準備。82%的學生認為撰寫論文中遇到的最大困難是資料缺乏,尤其是原版資料。他們做論文的主要資料來源是本校圖書館和其他高校的圖書館或市圖書館(各占30%左右)。據調查有超過50%的學生花了最多的時間來查資料。由于我們是傳統的理工科院校,文科書籍數目極少,雖然近幾年大量購買和訂閱了一定量的圖書、期刊,可是從論文選題覆蓋面的廣度和學生的人數來看,無論是圖書的種類還是冊數都無法滿足需要。資料中最至關重要的學術期刊,尤其是西文期刊學生都難以看到。缺少其他途徑的學生最后只得向指導教師借閱或去書店購買。參考書目極其雷同造成了同一方向論文的內容大同小異。畢業論文規定必須有3本以上的參考書。可喜的是調查顯示一半以上的學生使用了6至10本參考書,另有25%的學生使用了10本以上。但另一現象不容忽視,那便是大多數的學生的參考書中只有一兩本原版書,僅有1人使用了6本。第一手的英文資料嚴重匱乏已嚴重地阻礙了學科的發展。50%的學生認為論文中最重要的成分是層次清晰,主題明確。另有50%的人則認為是選題新穎,有自己的調查和觀點。前者所持的是對文章的傳統標準,而后者則強調了對正規的學術論文的要求。這說明已有一部分學生了解了畢業論文的性質和要求。研究方法是一個常常被指導教師和學生忽略的問題。中式教育強調照本宣科,忽視獨立思考的能力。

成績仍應介于及格與中等之間。

三討論面對資料缺乏,指導教師不夠,學生英語功底、寫作能力尚欠火候的局面,有不少教師認為本科生寫畢業論文純屬勞民傷財

并舉出國外一些大學的做法,如不要求寫或選優秀學生寫等。對此筆者認為不但要求全部學生寫,還要上下一致,認真對待。其理由有三:首先,盡管今后并不是所有的學生都會走搞研究,做學問的道路,但高等教育在與社會需求相接軌的同時也需要一點超脫。除了讓學生學到實用知識之外,高校還是培養科學精神和訓練科研技能的地方。其次,實用英語論,即只要學好實用英語的聽、說、讀、寫,無須了解該學科的一些理論知識和撰寫論文的論調大肆流行,嚴重影響了學生的思辨能力的培養。多年來,外語專業的學生偏重于記憶力和模仿力的訓練,往往患了思辨缺席癥。和很多其它的文科專業比較,外語專業的學生缺乏邏輯思維和分析判斷的能力。其實這是大多數中國學生的通病,只不過外語專業的學生更重罷了。思辨力被長期閑置,不僅阻礙了英語水平的進一步提高,而且有礙于今后的科研工作。這也是造成口語課學生無話可說或缺乏深度,全國英語演講比賽非專業選手絲毫不比專業選手遜色的一大原因。培養外語專業學生的思辨能力,給予他們更多的鍛煉思維,鍛煉筆頭功夫的機會已成為刻不容緩的任務。第三,合格的外語人才除了應具備觀察力,記憶力,思維力和速讀能力外,還要具備一定的創造力。所謂“創造力”,就是創造性思維能力和獨立發展能力。而畢業論文的撰寫正是對學生創造力的一種引導和挖掘。雖然每年的畢業論文良莠不齊,但從那些論文中教師和學生都看到了創造力的存在和不足。鼓勵認真撰寫畢業論文,發現論文中的新意和獨到的見解,獎勵和推薦優秀,對論文質量嚴格把關等一系列配套措施將有力地推動學生創造力的發揮。如果本科畢業論文工作只是為了走形式,應付檢查而不注重質量、效果的話,以上三點就無法成立,畢業論文的存在意義也值得懷疑了。

無論是指導教師還是學生都把它當作正規的學術活動來看待,無疑可以提升其存在的價值。我們可以把畢業論文撰寫中出現的林林總總的問題分為主觀和客觀兩個方面。主觀因素包括教師和學生的認識和態度,學生的認真程度等;客觀因素包括資料缺乏,教師經驗不夠,學生語言功底尚不深厚并對論文選題缺乏基本概念等。主觀因素造成教師對學生的最后選題把關不嚴而使有些學生的論文選題偏大或意義不大(外校專家的評語);有不少學生從初稿到成稿只修改了一至兩遍。客觀因素則造成參考書較少并大量雷同,論文的語言質量尚存問題,成績的評定與標準有一定的出入等。由于其它理工科院系客觀因素造成的問題較少,目前學校把多數精力放在了主觀因素造成的問題上;而要解決客觀因素造成的問題絕非一朝一夕之功,沒有校方大力支持更是舉步維艱。由于傳統的理工科院校英語專業的學科建設,師資配備,資料建設等都有待完善,英語專業本科畢業論文出現的問題自然要比綜合性大學或專業外語院校多。本科畢業論文在一定程度上反映了學科建設的狀況。畢業論文工作所反映出來的問題折射了學科建設中存在的問題。要解決和改變上述問題和現象,單靠教師自身的力量是不夠的。要改變現在的狀況也非短期所能達到。只有不斷改善辦學條件,不斷規范各方面的工作才能辦好英語專業。
